Digg is back from the dead again. TechCrunch covered the relaunch on May 11, 2026, with a headline that captures the surprise: "Digg tries again, this time as an AI news aggregator." The previous Digg reboot shut down in March of this year, killed by bot traffic the team couldn't moderate and by a positioning that did not differentiate from Reddit. Kevin Rose returned full-time in April to rebuild.
The new product is structurally different. Digg now ingests content from X in real time, performs sentiment analysis and clustering on the firehose, and surfaces stories ranked by which influential voices are talking about them. The implicit antagonist is the current attention layer — algorithmic feeds optimized for engagement rather than relevance. The bet is that the two have diverged enough that there is now product-market fit for a curated-curators model.
The names on the deal are the part to read. Kevin Rose founded the original Digg in 2004. Alexis Ohanian cofounded Reddit. The two products that defined the social news category for fifteen years are now sitting on the same team building one product. The implicit claim: the volume of news in the AI category has grown enough that the aggregation layer needs to be rebuilt from scratch, and the people who built the original layers are the right team to do it.
The site is starting with AI news as its only vertical. If the model works — measured by retention, share volume, and whether the most-influential-voices signal beats engagement-weighted alternatives — Digg will expand into other verticals. If it doesn't work in AI, where the underlying news velocity is highest, it likely doesn't work anywhere.
What to watch: whether the launch product retains users at a rate higher than algorithm-driven alternatives over 30 days, whether Twitter/X moves to throttle real-time engagement data access (the underlying ingestion fuel), and whether any other category — security, climate, biotech — gets a similar curated-curators relaunch by mid-summer. If the model survives the first iteration, it is a template, not just a product.
