Google held #TheAndroidShow I/O Edition on May 13, 2026, and previewed the platform-level rebrand of Android. Gemini Intelligence is the new layer. Sameer Samat, who runs Android, gave CNBC the framing. Google is transitioning Android from an operating system to an intelligence system.

Read that sentence twice. Android stops being a mobile OS that happens to have a chatbot. Android becomes an agentic platform where the system itself is the assistant. Gemini Intelligence pulls relevant information from Gmail. Builds shopping carts. Books reservations. Looks at a barbecue guest list. Builds a menu. Adds ingredients to Instacart. Returns for approval before checkout. The OS just became the agent.

The rollout sequence matters. Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones first, this summer. Then watches. Then cars. Then glasses. By Q4, the Gemini Intelligence layer will be live on every device class Google sells. Samsung gets it before any Pixel-only update — a deliberate move to make the Galaxy install base the proof point.

The timing is the strategic part. Apple's WWDC is three weeks away. Apple Intelligence has not had its second-generation rollout yet, and the perception is that Apple is behind. Google scheduled the Gemini Intelligence preview specifically to set the narrative ahead of WWDC. Whatever Apple announces in June will be measured against the Samat "OS to intelligence system" line.

What to watch: the actual feature parity on launch day this summer, Samsung's bundling strategy on the next Galaxy flagship, and Apple's response at WWDC on June 8. Three data points decide whether Gemini Intelligence is the new OS or just the new marketing line.
