Google just announced Googlebook — Android-based laptops designed for Gemini from scratch

Google did a thing on May 12 that almost nobody outside Mountain View saw coming. At #TheAndroidShow I/O Edition, Sameer Samat — president of Google Platforms and Devices — pulled back the curtain on Googlebook, a brand-new laptop category running Android instead of ChromeOS and designed around Gemini from the ground up. The implicit funeral is for the Chromebook. The explicit pitch is the Apple-Intelligence-on-laptop counter Google needed.

The headline features. Magic Pointer lets you select anything on screen — text, image, calendar item — and ask Gemini to do something with it. Set up a meeting from a date inside an email. Visualize a piece of furniture in a room you photographed. The friction between "see something" and "act on something" gets collapsed into one cursor interaction.

Create My Widget lets you describe a custom widget in plain English — meal prep ideas for the week, weather details for two cities at once, fitness goal progress — and AI generates and installs it on your phone, watch, or Googlebook home screen. The widget economy that Apple shipped in 2020 just got reinvented around natural language.

Quick Access integrates your connected Android phone's file system directly into the Googlebook file browser. The cross-device workflow that AirDrop pioneered and that ChromeOS only partially solved is now a single inline view. What to watch: pricing and silicon partnerships (rumored Tensor-class chips inside the first Googlebook), retail launch timing this fall, and whether Chromebook line gets sunset or rebranded under the Googlebook umbrella. The second question is the harder one — Chromebook is the back-to-school education franchise. Killing it costs Google market share in K-12 unless Googlebook lands at a sub-$500 price point.
